12. Caption
To Man Ray

It shows Man Ray pointing to an architectonic panel which simulates a frame on the wall. The photograph in itself says nothing or says many things. I took it while Man Ray, indicating that empty and framed space, was saying “Ça c'est mon dernier tableau” (This is my last painting). The image reveals nothing of the kind because the photograph has been suggested not by the visual situation, that is Man Ray acting in a certain way or adopting a certain attitude, but by his words. I have photographed a sentence. But this can be made visible only putting the sentence in the photo, that is inserting a caption. This thing is, after all, confirmed by Man Ray himself who does not indicate a painting but utters a sentence which is his painting: it is both Man Ray's work and my photograph.
